1 - 19 Hersh Arnold

Mechanicsburg, Pa.

born 1828 Jebenhausen, Germany
died July 5, 1840 Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Translation of Hebrew epitaph:

Hersh, son of Netanel Arnold, lies here, died on Sunday, 4, and buried on Monday, 5 Tammuz [5]600, in Mechanicsburg

Additional information:

Son of Sandel Arnold and his wife, Babet (Kahn), of Mechanicsburg. The family had immigrated from Jebenhausen, Germany, in 1839.

This is the earliest headstone, and Hirsh's burial may have been the first on the property then still privately owned by his relatives, Philip and Fannie Arnold, in Chambersburg.

The phonetic rendering of the place name, "Mechanicsburg", in the Hebrew epitaph reflects the American pronounciation.
