Sarah and her newly married husband, Gerson Levi, had
arrived at the port of New York aboard the ship "Charles Carroll" on
September 1, 1834. Together with their relatives and travel
companions, Philip and Fannie Arnold,
they established themselves in
Chambersburg, probably the first Jewish residents of this town. In 1839
they moved on to Hagerstown.
