Translation of Hebrew epitaph:
Here lies the
esteemed woman, Mrs. Fannie Arnold, died on Wednesday, and buried on
Thursday, 3 Tammuz [5]610
Additional information:
Philip Arnold and his newly married wife, 16-year-old Fannie, had
arrived at the port of New York aboard the ship "Charles Carroll" on
September 1, 1834. Together with their relatives and travel companions,
Gerson and Sara Levi, they established themselves in
Chambersburg, probably the first Jewish residents of this town. Philip
and Fannie Arnold were the owners of the property on E. Washington
Street that was used as a Jewish burial ground from 1840. The property
was deeded to the Hebrew Benevolent Society in July 1844, when the
Arnold family was about to remove to Carlisle.
On August 7, 1850, a mere five days before she died, Fannie was enumerated
in the census. After her death,
Philip remarried her younger
sister, Sophie.
The headstone bears the marks of vandalism. The Hebrew epitaph is
badly weathered.
