Chambersburg, Pa.

born c. 1801 Bavaria, Germany
died 1872 Chambersburg, Pa.

Additional information:

Wife of Michael Greenawalt. Immigrated from Breitenborn in Hesse, Germany, with her family in 1834. On the same vessel were Alexander Stine and his wife, Esther, probably close relatives of theirs. The two families never parted ever since. After a few months in Maryland they moved to Hanover, York Co., Pa., before establishing themselves in Chambersburg in 1847.

In 1870 the Greenawalt household consisted of Rachel, now a widow, her son, Moses, and a daughter, Ellen, widow of Samuel Arnold of Carlisle, with her five children. Twelve-year-old Cyrus Arnold was assisting Moses Greenawalt in the manufacture of cigars.

The headstone is badly weathered and bears the marks of vandalism.
