Additional information:
Wife of Michael Greenawalt. Immigrated
from Breitenborn in Hesse, Germany, with her
family in 1834. On the
same
vessel were Alexander
Stine and his
wife, Esther,
probably close relatives of
theirs. The two families never parted ever since. After a few months in
Maryland they moved to Hanover, York Co., Pa., before establishing
themselves in Chambersburg in 1847.
In 1870 the Greenawalt household consisted of Rachel,
now a widow, her
son, Moses, and a daughter, Ellen, widow of Samuel Arnold of
Carlisle, with her five children. Twelve-year-old Cyrus Arnold was
assisting Moses Greenawalt in the
manufacture of cigars.
The headstone is badly weathered and bears the marks of vandalism.
