Translation of Hebrew epitaph:
Here is buried the
righteous man, Michael, son of Pinchas, died with a good name on
Monday, 18 Menachem, and buried on Wednesday, 20 Menachem [5]626. May
his soul be bound in the bond of life
Additional information:
Husband of Rachel Greenawalt. Immigrated
from Breitenborn in Hesse, Germany, with his
family, arriving at the port of Baltimore on August 12, 1834. On the
same
vessel were Alexander Stine and his
wife, Esther, probably close relatives of
theirs. The two families never parted ever since. After a few months in
Maryland they moved to Hanover, York Co., Pa., before establishing
themselves in Chambersburg in 1847.
Michael Greenawalt was a grocer and cigar maker. In August 1865 he was
listed among local grocers who, "since the burning of the town [by
Confederate troops in 1864], have been compelled to occupy small
temporary shanties, with not sufficient room to keep large stocks or
display goods". The returns of his annual sales, $ 12,000,
were
considerably below those of his competitors. To make matters worse, a
fire destroyed the stock and fixtures in his store in September 1865.
On August 1, 1866 a local paper, the Franklin
Repository and Transcript, reported that
"Michael Greenawalt, known by most as 'Moses,' died suddenly last
Monday on his way home after attending to some business at the bank. It
is believed that the cause of his death was apoplexy."
