born c. 1815 Ichenhausen, Germany
died September 17, 1841 Hagerstown [?]
Translation of Hebrew epitaph:
Here lies Isaac,
son of Moses Koschland, died on the eve of the Holy Sabbath, and buried
on Sunday, 4 Tishri [5]602
Additional information:
This headstone is very similar to
the one dedicated to Samuel Pappenheimer.
Both
died in 1841, and both burials were slightly out of the
ordinary, as neither Pappenheimer nor Koschland were
members of the Benevolent
Society which administered the cemetery. It is recorded in the minutes
book of the Society that the amount of $ 5.00 was paid for the burial
of "Isaak Kusland".
Isaac Koschland had immigrated from Ichenhausen in Bavaria, Germany, in
1840. He had travelled with a group of fellow young Jews from his home
village, including Lewis Kramer, later a resident of Hagerstown and
member of the Benevolent Society. It is possible that Isaac Koschland
stayed with the Kramer family.
