Still a bachelor, he resided in Waynesboro, Pa., before establishing himself as a merchant in Hagerstown in the mid-1850's. He was joined by his brother, Abraham, who had left his home country in 1853 with his family of eight after falling into bankruptcy. Another brother, Philip, resided in Frederick, Md., around 1850. A few years later his place was taken by Joseph Rosenstock who ran a dry goods and clothing store - famous for the photographRosenstock photograph of Confederate troops marching through Frederick, which was taken from its balcony on September 10, 1862.
