Hagerstown, Md.
born June 29, 1823 Bavaria, Germany
died August 9, 1861 Hagerstown, Md.
Translation of Hebrew epitaph:
Here lies the
esteemed woman, Mrs. Sarah, wife of the honorable Nethanel Rosenstock,
died on Friday, the eve of the Holy Sabbath, 3 Elul [5]621
Additional information:
Sara's husband, Samuel Rosenstock, was the first of four brothers from
Tann in Bavaria
(Germany) to immigrate to this area, arriving at the port of Baltimore
on September 13, 1841. Still a bachelor, he resided in Waynesboro, Pa.,
before establishing himself as a merchant in Hagerstown in the
mid-1850's. He was joined by his brother, Abraham, who had left his
home country in 1853 with his family of eight after falling into
bankruptcy. Another brother, Philip, resided in Frederick,
Md., around 1850. A few years later his place was taken by Joseph
Rosenstock who ran a dry goods and clothing store - famous for the photograph
of Confederate troops marching through
Frederick, which was taken from its balcony on September 10, 1862.
The headstone bears the marks of vandalism.
