A PIOUS MERCHANT
Gerson Levi
born Nov 9, 1808 Buttenhausen, Germany
died May 27, 1869 Hagerstown, Md.
Several
headstones for members of the Levi family stand out for their
distinctive design, which is dominated by a wreath of flowers, the
epitaphs just giving the name and dates of birth and death. There are
no
Hebrew inscriptions on these stones.
These headstones may not convey the impression of Jewish
traditionalism. Yet Gerson Levi played a most important part in Jewish
religious life in the area. He was
also a driving force behind the founding of the Benevolent Society,
which
administered the Jewish cemetery of Chambersburg, and served as its
secretary and board member.
