"Chambersburg Stone"

The Hebrew inscription on this badly damaged stone appears to have consisted of three lines only and is barely legible, with the exception of the place name "[Ch]ambersburg" in the last line. The date is hard to read but likely to be September 1840.

It is difficult to see how the particulars usually contained in an epitaph would have fitted in the remaining spaces. As the Benevolent Society of Chambersburg was founded in September 1840, this may not be a headstone but a dedication stone for the burial ground.
