"Here lies Zalman, son of Gerson
Levi"
Solomon Levi, whose father owned a dry goods store in Hagerstown, Md., was six or seven years old when he died. The epitaph does not state his date of death, but only the date of his burial, October 5, 1843: Little Solomon appears to have died just before the Day of Atonement, the most important holiday of the Jewish year, and could only be buried the day after. Infant mortality was high at the time. Besides Solomon, three of his brothers and a sister died at a young age and are buried on this cemetery. |
