FAMILY MATTERS
Established at a time when Jewish population was sparse and scattered
and organized Jewish congregations did not exist in the wider area, the
Old Jewish Cemetery of Chambersburg testifies to the strong bonds of
tradition among German Jewish immigrants in mid-19th century. Equally
strong, to be sure, were the bonds of kinship. Of the Jewish families
in this region, many were originally from the same
village in southern Germany, Jebenhausen.
The epitaphs of the Old Jewish Cemetery of Chambersburg tell the
story of an extended family network. Take, for example, the headstone
for Joseph
Arnold: One child, one brother, one sister, four grandchildren,
three
brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, three nieces and six nephews of his
are buried in this cemetery, too, not to mention several of his more
distant relatives.
